White Fang
White Fang
White Fang is the story of a wild wolf's struggle for survival in the freezing Yukon and North West Territories. Written by Jack London, an American author who loved dogs and was obsessed with writing about them, White Fang shows his deep love for animals. The book tells of the bond between man and animal as well as the conflict that could be caused when these two species co-exist together.
White Fang is not your typical dog story. The titular character is anything but cute and cuddly; he is mangy with sharp teeth and claws to match. Despite this, he is taken in by a kind man who takes care of him and even names him after a creature that lurks in the night. This shows us the positive side of humans as they can be capable to significant acts of kindness when it comes to animals especially those who seem helpless.
It also teaches us not to jump into conclusions based on appearances alone. White Fang does not submit willingly to his new master but instead interrupts every attempt at communication with threats and aggression until he learns that this human is different from all other men out there. Because of this we understand why the book has been considered an allegory for racial conflicts and even class struggles (dogs/men Europeans vs Native Americans).
