The White Company

The White Company

It was after listening to a lecture on the Middle Ages in 1889 that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was moved to create the historical novel The White Company. With the Hundred Years’ War as its backdrop, this story of adventure and romance takes place across England, France and Spain. The book introduces the reader to both fictional and historical figures involved in the formation and activities of the White Company of mercenaries.

The ragtag band of freebooters, driven by their desire for fame and glory, stand together in their unwavering loyalty to Sir Nigel Loring, the White Company commander. Terribly nearsighted, short and bald, Sir Nigel’s unassuming exterior conceals the heart of a true warrior and a chivalrous temperament. Meanwhile, Alleyne, son of Edric and Sir Nigel's devoted squire, is at the center of the hilarious exploits of the White Company during the Hundred Years' War. Young Alleyne, once raised in the protective walls of a monastery, matures amidst the chaos of military strife and the perplexing customs of courtly love.

Although Doyle is well known for creating Sherlock Holmes, he was also an avid historian. He considered The White Company as his best work, and rightly so. This lively story and its vivid portrayal of the Middle Ages is sure to enthrall readers of all age groups.
