The Torrents of Spring
The Torrents of Spring
The Torrents of Spring is a humorous novel that tells the story of writer Scripps O'Neill and World War I veteran Yogi Johnson. Both men work at a factory in northern Michigan, and disagree over the ideal of the perfect woman. When both men's relationships sour, each man's version of the ideal woman is proven to be unrealistic and overly simple.
It is unique for its critique of the Chicago school of literature and its satirical portrayal of American social life. The story has its roots in Hemingway's own exposure to American media culture which he viewed as a ridiculous exaggeration of “the normal.”
