The Prussian Officer and Other Stories is a unique collection of 12 stories written between 1907 and 1914. The namesake narrative tells the story of a military captain and his orderly. The captain wasted much of his youth and has remained single, though he has taken on mistresses throughout his life. His young orderly is involved with a woman, and the captain, being jealous, prevents the orderly from having this relationship by taking up the orderly's time. The captain abuses the orderly until he rebels and murders the captain in the forest.

Other stories in this book include elements of the divisions between societal classes, conflicts of the heart, the dehumanizing of people during industrialism, human instinct and survival, emotional vitality, and the interweaving of the forces of nature with individual lives, failures, and happiness.

D.H. Lawrence has created a unique collection of stories showcasing his incredible writing talents, which made him a leading gentleman in the modernist movement. His stories show remarkable sensitivity, raw emotion, power, depth, and artistic integrity. He is valued within the English literature community as a great visionary thinker.
