John Bagnell Bury (J.B. Bury) was born in Monaghan on October 16, 1861. He was an incredible scholar, philologist, and historian. John was a Regius Professor of Modern History at Trinity College, Dublin, for up to nine years (1893-1902). He was later appointed a Regius Professor teaching Modern History at Cambridge University from 1902 to his death.
