Marie L. McLaughlin grew up in a predominantly Native American community in Minnesota and was of one-fourth Sioux blood. Later married to Major James McLaughlin, she accompanied her husband to North Dakota and Dakota Territory and spent ten years building relationships with the Native Americans located there. In 1881 McLaughlin transferred to Standing Rock on the Missouri River to liaise with the recently surrendered Sioux. As she spoke their language, the author could freely converse with the Sioux. They soon took her into their confidence, and she found herself in the exceptional position of being able to document their myths and legends.
The result is this intriguing book which contains unique and historic myths handed down to the author by the elder tribespeople of the Sioux.
