Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre, an orphaned girl, suffers a cruel childhood at the hands of her aunt and is educated in harsh conditions. However, none of this dulls her determination to make her way in the world. On taking a job as a governess at Thornfield Hall, she meets the mysterious Mr. Rochester, a man whom, despite his initial surly manner, Jane quickly realizes she loves. But some strange happenings at the house arouse Jane’s suspicions that there is more to Mr. Rochester’s story than meets the eye. Will his complicated situation prevent the couple from enjoying the happiness they deserve?
Part romance, part Gothic novel and part coming-of-age tale, this classic novel broke ground in using the first-person narrative to tell the story from its heroine’s point of view. As a depiction of British life in the 19th century, it is unflinchingly stark, while carrying a message of hope. It has been widely read, studied and enjoyed around the world by every generation since it was first published in 1847 and remains every bit as absorbing and as relevant to our society today.
