Island

Island

Island by Aldous Huxley is a novel depicting the utopian island society of Pala. The people of Pala are free of diseases and vices, such as smoking, drunkenness'—and even boredom. They also live in peace with animals on their island, while the rest of the world lives in fear. This book was written in the late 1950s, when society was very much obsessed with material gain. It follows a man who is introduced to this land of peace and discovers its secrets.

Throughout this book there are many themes represented, such as religion, politics, sexuality, health care and mental health awareness (and lack thereof). Most importantly though, it's an eye-opener in terms of revealing how destructive our modern day society can be if we don't take care of ourselves—physically and mentally—as well as how we can find balance and peace of mind.
