The book Hannibal by Jacob Abbott is a biography of Hannibal Barca, a Carthaginian general. The story is based on actual and accurate accounts and events throughout Hannibal’s career and general life.

Abbott begins his book with a description of Carthage, Hannibal’s origin. He then gives a clear account of Hannibal’s life till he joined military training. During the second Punic Wars, he led a Carthaginian army into the great civilization clash experienced in Spain, the Alps, and Italy.

During his 15-year campaign in Italy, Hannibal won numerous victories over the Romans. This includes the Battle of Cannae, known as one of the greatest in history. Though great, Hannibal was unable to control his insatiable desire to show his ability to defeat the Romans, even when luck was not on his side. Eventually, the Romans defeated him in 202 BC in the Battle of Zama, after which he went into exile. Hannibal later died in 183 BC.

Jacob Abbott was born on 14th November 1803. He was a renowned American teacher and an incredible writer. He started school at Hallowell Academy and later at Bowdoin College.
