Coriolanus
Coriolanus
Coriolanus is a play written by William Shakespeare. It is one of the last Roman plays as well as one of the last two tragedies that Shakespeare wrote before his death. Believed to have been written between 1605 and 1608, the story is based on the life of the celebrated Roman General Caius Marcius Coriolanus from 5th century BC.
Coriolanus was given his name after he bravely lead the Roman military to victory at the city of Corioli against the Volscians. Following his successful battle he seeks to be consul, but his hatred for the Plebeians and the shared aggression of the tribunes lead to his exile from Rome. Coriolanus then seeks revenge for his banishment by teaming up with his previous enemies against Rome.
