Abraham Lincoln's Greatest Political Speeches

Abraham Lincoln's Greatest Political Speeches

Abraham Lincoln was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln led the United States through its Civil War—its bloodiest war and perhaps its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis. In doing so, he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy.

Lincoln's election in 1860 was the final trigger for seven southern states to declare their secession from the United States and form an independent country: South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. After war began on April 12th 1861 with shots fired on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor - Four more southern Southern states would eventually follow after others joined the rebellion: Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee and North Carolina.

Lincoln closely supervised the victorious war effort without taking control of each battle or all major decisions related to it. His leadership skills during tough times made him a hero to many Americans. He is remembered today for this strength of character and stability in a period of great crisis.

This work is a collection of the greatest public speeches that Abraham Lincoln gave throughout his life and career.
