Set in a dystopian future where three global superpowers have divided the world, and exist in a state of perpetual war. In order to maintain their hold on power, these three states will go to any lengths to keep their populations docile and obedient.
Winston, the stories protagonist, is a middling political worker in London, Oceania who secretly harbours rebellious attitudes towards the omnipresent political system. He becomes disaffected with his work, as he begins to remember what life was like before the party came into being. Once he understands that he is committing through crime, he realizes it is only a matter of time before the wrath of the state bears down upon him. Can anyone survive what awaits them in Room 101?
1984 is considered the greatest work of dystopian political fiction. It has often been imitated but never surpassed in quality. It deals with many modern-day political issues like mass surveillance, individual rights vs the collective, revisionist history, and mob rule.
